Valerian Extract is a product extracted from valerian roots or rhizomes, which has been included in the pharmacopoeia of European and American countries. It is generally marketed in capsules.
Basic Information
Product Name: Valerian Extract, Valerian Powder Extract
Botanical Name: Valeriana officinalis
Specification: 4:1; 10:1; 0.3%-0.8% Valeric Acid
Part Used: Root or Rhizomes
Extract Method: Grain Alcohol/Water
Test Mothed: HPLC/TLC
Benefits
Valerian Extract has antidepressant, sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant functions, as well as antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, and hepatoprotective effects. Animal studies show that Valerian Extract also has antiarrhythmic effects.
Application
Valerian can relieve insomnia, sleep disorders, panic, anxiety and other disorders, while also relaxing muscles and restoring homeostasis. Valerian often seems to take effect over a longer period of time (several weeks), but many users have found that it works immediately.
Valerian has also been traditionally used to treat gastrointestinal pain and irritable bowel syndrome. From a stakes perspective, Valerian is sometimes recommended as a first-line treatment option. Valerian is often used as a transitional drug when stopping taking benzodiazepines and is often considered an effective substitute.
Valerian is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a sedative. Valerian is currently an effective treatment for insomnia, and a recent meta-analysis provides strong evidence for this. Valerian has been recommended as a treatment for epilepsy, but there is no research to support it, although an analogue of one of its ingredients, valproic acid, has been used as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug.
In the United States, Valerian is sold as a nutritional supplement. Taking valerian as a dietary supplement as a treatment has become extremely popular, especially after the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in the United States in 1994. The bill allows agents to sell over-the-counter supplements so they are exempt from U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.
