Safflower Yellow

Safflower Yellow is a natural red pigment derived from safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), earlier known as Carthamine. It is quinone chalcone compound, which is a mixture of various water-soluble components, mainly including Safflor Yellow A, Safflor Yellow B, HSYA, AHSYB, etc., which promote blood circulation. It can remove blood stasis, unblock meridians and relieve pain. It is used for grade I, II and III stable exertional angina pectoris caused by blood stasis in the heart and blood. Symptoms include chest pain and tightness, palpitation, shortness of breath, etc. It is used as a dye and a food coloring. As a food additive, it is known as Natural Red 26.

The appearance of Carthamus (Safflower) Yellow is yellow or brown yellow powder. It can easily dissolve in water and ethanol solution, but not in ether, petroleum ether, oil and acetone. It is an excellent coloring agent for starch, but slightly coloring for protein. Ferric ion can make it becomes black. It has good resistance to light and high temperature.


Safflower Yellow is extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine safflower and consists of a mixture of various water-soluble chalcones. The main pharmacologically active ingredient is hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA), which has the effects of promoting blood circulation, promoting menstruation, removing blood stasis and relieving pain.


Modern pharmacological research shows that Safflower Yellow can dilate micro arteries, increase tissue blood perfusion, and improve microcirculation; it can also resist platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity, anticoagulation, inhibit thrombosis, and regulate blood lipids, scavenge harmful oxygen free radicals, prevent excessive oxidation of cells and exert antioxidant effects. It is suitable for coronary heart disease, vascular embolic diseases, hypertension, diabetes complications, etc.


Safflower Yellow can be widely used in instant rice & flour products, soda pop, fruit-flavored beverages, beverages of fruit and vegetable juice (pulp), decorative fruits and vegetables, frozen drinks (edible ice excluded), candy, topping, preserved fruits ,jelly, canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned eight precious porridges, imitation wine, fillings for cereal foods, salted and cured meat products, condiments, puffed food. When use Carthamus Yellow, dissolve the color with a small amount of water first, and then mix the color solution with food materials.

Usage Reference

In compliance with GB2760: Hygienic standards for uses of food additives,
the maximum usage limit is 0.5g/kg for instant rice & flour products, and the maximum usage limit for other products is 0.2g/kg.
