Benefits
Ginseng is believed to have amazing healing properties, increasing wisdom and longevity, and curing neurological disorders. Ginseng is an adaptogen that can help the body quickly restore homeostasis, reduce the effects of aging, and has been used to prevent heart disease. Ginseng is used to enhance physical (including sexual) and mental performance, and to increase energy and resistance to the harmful effects of stress and aging. The medicinal history of ginseng can be traced back to nearly 2,000 years ago. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, ginseng is a tonic that can enhance physical strength, increase blood volume, promote life and appetite, quiet the spirit, and give wisdom. Ginseng is used to treat conditions such as memory deficits, gastrointestinal disorders, and disabilities.
Mechanism
The roots of Asian and American ginseng contain several saponins named ginsenosides that are believed to contribute to the adaptogenic properties. They are used in traditional Chinese medicine to improve stamina and combat fatigue and stress. Saponins are interesting natural compounds found in many plants, herbs, roots, and beans. Saponins have potential in the prevention and treatment of diseases of the heart and circulatory system. For instance, they inhibit the formation of lipid peroxides (fat oxidation) in cardiac muscle or in the liver, they influence the function of enzymes contained in them, they decrease blood coagulation, cholesterol, and sugar levels in blood, and they stimulate the immune system. Some saponins may even have anti-tumor properties.
Safety
Ginseng is a mild herb and is considered to be extremely safe. Negative side-effects are virtually nonexistent. It is not a stimulant and does not cause feelings of over excitement, agitation or insomnia, when taken responsibly. However, it has been reported that large doses of ginseng can cause nausea, high blood pressure, sleeplessness, restlessness and sexual arousal. The recommended daily dose is small and large doses of ginseng are not recommended or necessary.
Dosage and Administration of Ginseng
Ginseng can be purchased readily as a whole root (dried, peeled), a dried powder or a standardized extract. Standardized Panax ginseng contains 4-5% ginsenosides, and standardized Siberian ginseng contains 0.5-1.0% eleutherosides. Standardized extracts are often taken at a rate of 100 to 200 milligrams daily. As a dried root, 500 to 2000 mg daily should be taken. For recovering from an illness, the elderly should take 500 mg twice daily for three months. As an antistress/antifatigue agent, 200-600 mg/day of standardized extract, preferably in divided doses, or 0.5-2 mg/day of powdered root. Ginseng is commonly taken for long periods. The effectiveness of commercial preparations may vary, so follow the labeling whenever available or the advices for a health professional.
