Magnolia Bark

Magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis) is a traditional Chinese medicine (where it is known in TCM as houpu or hou po) used since 100 A.D. for treating "stagnation of qi" (low energy) as well as a variety of syndromes, such as digestive disturbances caused by emotional distress and emotional turmoil.

Magnolia bark is rich in two biphenol compounds, (Magnolol and Honokiol), which are thought to contribute to the primary anti-stress and cortisol-lowering effects of the plant. Magnolia bark also contains a bit less than 1% of an essential oil known as eudesmol,which is classified as a triterpene compound, and may provide some additional benefits as an antioxidant.

Mechanism

The main components of Magnolia Bark are magnolol, honokiol, tetrahydro magnolol, isohonophenol and volatile oil. It has central inhibition, muscle relaxation, anti-ulcer, antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-allergic effects, etc. It has antihypertensive, anti-platelet aggregation and antagonistic calmodulin effects on the cardiovascular system.

Magnolia bark contains volatile oil. The main components of the oil include β-nonyl oleyl alcohol, magnolol, honokiol and tetrahydro magnolol; and other include magnolia, magnolia, and tannin. Houpu decoction has inhibitory effects on pneumococcal, diphtheria, hemolytic streptococcus, Bacillus subtilis, Shigella and Shigella dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus anthracis and several dermatophytes. For the intestine, small doses are excited, large doses are inhibited, and there is excitatory effect on the bronchus. Magnolia officinus can cause motor nerve endings to paralyze, causing body skeletal muscle relaxation; has antihypertensive effect, reflexively causes respiratory excitement when blood pressure is reduced, and heart rate increases. Magnolol has a preventive effect on experimental gastric ulcer, and has a certain inhibitory effect on histamine-induced duodenal fistula, which can inhibit gastric juice secretion.
